Breathing and Gravity

Uncategorized Aug 06, 2026
Breathing is a non-optional movement response to gravity. Typically, we are taught that the diaphragm is a muscle that controls breathing. However, we can turn it on and off. As maturing humans, we can 'hold' or 'force' our breath with control, but we cannot stop and start it. In actuality, to start breathing, it's one of the body's first approaches to opposing gravity. When a baby has issues organizing breathing and gravity in their first breath, or during the first three months of life, the child will have an extreme risk of needing movement therapy for walking skills. This is due to the lack of organization to gravity in breath will do the same for vertical positions and locomotion.

The Breathing Reflex

There is the significance of breath as there is the significance of opposing gravity for breath to happen. It is in the organization of opposing gravity in breathing that formulates the use of gravity in your newborn's ability to stimulate neurological synapses of learning from movements.
During birth and the first few months of life, the diaphragm is working in every position but not upright. Independent sitting doesn't happen until 5.5 months.
