Breathing, Swallowing and Development

Uncategorized Mar 28, 2026

Laryngomalacia

First, please seek immediate medical attention with your baby's Ear, Nose, and Throat ENT and/or go to the Emergency Room ER.

Did you know that your baby’s ability to breathe and swallow in rhythm is one of the earliest signs of healthy nervous system development?

In infancy, breath-swallow coordination is everything. It sets the foundation for:

  • Feeding success
  • Sleep quality
  • Head and neck control
  • Even early motor skills

But when something like laryngomalacia is present (that soft, floppy tissue above the vocal cords), this rhythm breaks down.

You may see:

  • Noisy breathing or stridor
  • Back arching
  • Difficulty feeding or tiring during nursing
  • Misstaken for severe cerebral palsy CP
  • Lack of head control
  • Cannot cross midline
  • Poor weight gain
  • Frequent choking or gagging

Why does this matter?

Because breath-swallow rhythm isn't just about air — it's about timing and integration. It’s how the brainstem and body begin to communicate under pressure. When this coordination is off, other systems have to compensate — posture, tone, even digestion.

If your baby struggles with:
❌ Coordinated breathing while feeding
❌ Staying latched
❌ Seeming “on edge” during meals
...there may be deeper integration issues worth exploring.

The goal: To get medical help and developmental help at the same time.
