Harnessing Your Child's Inner Compass: Movement Lesson's Approach to Sensory Processing and Interoception
Sensory processing challenges can make navigating the world overwhelming for children. However, at Movement Lesson, we believe that by understanding and addressing the root cause of these challenges, we can empower children to thrive.
Beyond Sensory Regulation: Our Subsenses Hold the Key
Instead of simply focusing on regulating overwhelming sensory input, we delve deeper into the intricate workings of the human body through our unique framework of subsenses:
-
Balance + Counterbalance = ACTION: This subsense governs our ability to move purposefully and interact with the world. When dysregulated, it can manifest as clumsiness, difficulty with coordination, and an aversion to movement.
-
Succumb + Oppose = GRAVITY: This subsense helps us understand our relationship with gravity, crucial for balance and spatial awareness. Dysregulation can lead to fear of heights, difficulty navigating stairs, or feeling "grounded."
-
Rotation + Acceleration = MOMENTUM: This subsense drives our ability to generate and control momentum.Dysregulation can result in dizziness, motion sickness, or difficulty with activities like swinging or riding a bike.
-
Temperature + Pain = REACTIVE: This subsense informs us about our internal body state and protects us from harm. Dysregulation can manifest as extreme sensitivity to touch, temperature, or pain, or a lack of awareness of these sensations.
-
Proprioception + Spatial Orientation = KINESTHETIC: This subsense provides awareness of our body's position in space and the relationship between our body parts. Dysregulation can lead to clumsiness, difficulty with body awareness, or challenges with fine motor skills.
Through targeted movement activities, we aim to rewire the neural pathways associated with these subsenses, helping children develop a stronger sense of their internal world and how they interact with the external environment. By improving interoception – the awareness of internal bodily sensations – we create a solid foundation for emotional regulation and overall well-being.
Our approach is not about suppressing sensory responses but empowering children to understand and harness their unique sensory profiles. By addressing the underlying causes of sensory processing challenges, we open up a world of possibilities for children to thrive in all aspects of life.
