More Than The Milestones

The milestone is not the warning. Missing the milestone is not the warning.
Both are outcomes.
When we evaluate child development only by milestones, we are often looking at the end of a much larger developmental process.
Those are important observations. But they don't necessarily tell us how the child's Movement became organized to produce that outcome. A child can achieve a milestone while important Movement relationships are changing underneath it. And a child can miss a milestone for many different reasons.
That's why, in Movement Lesson™, I'm looking earlier.
What organization existed before the milestone?
What happened as the child moved toward it?
What happened to rotation?
What happened at the midlines?
How did vision participate?
How did the body organize within gravity?
Could the child transition into and out of the Movement—or were they simply able to maintain the final position?
And what happened afterward as development continued?
The milestone gives us information. Missing the milestone gives us information.
But neither, by itself, tells us where developmental organization began to change.
The milestone is not the warning. Missing the milestone is not the warning. Both are outcomes.
The warning may be found in the organization that exists before, during, and after the outcome.
That's why we have to learn to see more than milestones.
