Why Does My Child Lose Their Balance?

Balance is rarely the first problem.
It’s usually the result of something that happened earlier in development.
Instead of asking, “Why can’t my child balance?”

Can they use their vision while they move?
* Looking near and far
* Crossing visual midlines
* Using peripheral vision
* Looking where they are going

Can they transition smoothly?
* Sitting to standing
* Standing to squatting
* Getting on and off the floor
* Recovering from small losses of balance

Can they adapt to change?
* Different surfaces
* Stepping over obstacles
* Turning while walking
* Stopping and starting
Balance isn’t just standing still. Balance is the ability to stay organized while your environment changes. Sometimes the answer isn’t strengthening balance. It’s the stage of development that needs support first.
