10. The Diamond Scale as a Convergence Field
This is where your existing Diamond Scale becomes extremely important.
The main points and facets crossed during the Diamond Scale shouldn't only provide information about where vision is available.
They can also provide locations at which convergence should remain available.
Instead of testing convergence only along a central near/far line, you can examine it throughout the Diamond.
That potentially gives us a functional convergence map.
At the center: Midline convergence
Can the eyes organize together toward the shared visual target?
Can that organization be maintained?
Does one eye alter its relationship?
Does the convergence appear stable?
This establishes the central relationship.
But then the target has to move.
12. Left and Right Convergence
As the Diamond Scale moves through left and right visual space:
Crossing-midline convergence
Can the child maintain convergence as the target crosses center?
Does convergence remain available on the left?
Does it remain available on the right?
Is there a difference between the two?
Does one side introduce stress?
The transition itself becomes information.
13. Peripheral Convergence
This deserves its own category.
Peripheral convergence
During your peripheral arcs, convergence should continue to be functionally available.
This asks something very different from:
"Does the child have peripheral vision?"
Can the two eyes maintain their convergence organization while visual attention moves into peripheral space?
And then we can observe where the organization begins changing.
Does one eye stop participating?
Does the head substitute?
Does visual attention disappear?
Does convergence become unstable?
Where does the stress begin?
That's the information Turner Vision is looking for.
14. Upper and Lower Quadrant Convergence
Functional visual space is also vertical.
Therefore, convergence should be considered throughout:
as well as left and right.
The Diamond Scale facets then provide the transitions among these regions.
So the assessment is not simply checking isolated positions.
It is examining whether convergence remains organized through the changing spatial relationships represented by the Diamond.
15. Convergence Through the Diamond Facets
This may ultimately be one of the most important extensions of the Diamond Scale.
Every major location crossed during the Diamond assessment becomes a question:
Is convergence available here?
And every transition becomes another question:
Can convergence remain organized while moving from here to there?
location + transition + relationship
And this is where the assessment can begin showing where convergence stress occurs within functional visual space.
16. Convergence Is Fine Motor
The hands coming together are not a separate developmental story from the eyes coming together.
At approximately the same developmental period, the child is organizing:
two eyes → shared relationship
two hands → shared center
Then the hands begin functioning around that organized center.
come together → separate → reach → cross → manipulate across space
So visual convergence and fine-motor convergence develop as related expressions of developmental organization.
17. Convergence Is Gross Motor
The same principle applies to gross motor development.
The feet come toward center.
The extremities organize around center.
The body develops developmental midlines.
Weight transfer becomes available.
The child begins moving through and across midline.
The organization changes from horizontal to vertical.
Eventually the child moves through environmental space.
Therefore gross-motor organization and visual convergence cannot simply be treated as unrelated systems when you are trying to locate developmental stress.
18. Why a Foot Can Make You Ask About the Eyes
This brings us directly to the child whose foot was severely pronating.
You did not say: "Foot pronation proves convergence insufficiency."
You saw an organizational problem and wanted more information.
The first place you wanted to look was the child's visual convergence.
That's why you needed: a video of the eyes and a video of the full body.
You need both because you are examining whether visual organization and whole-body organization are showing a related developmental stress.
Without seeing the eyes, you cannot establish the visual relationship.
Without seeing the body, you cannot establish how that visual relationship is functioning within movement.
The parent's privacy decision is completely understandable, but it limits what can responsibly be inferred from the video.
