What Is Functional Vision? Why It Matters More Than You Think

Uncategorized Aug 09, 2025

When people hear “vision,” most think about one thing: glasses. Do you need them or not?

But vision is more than 20/20. In fact, most of what we do as humans relies not on clarity of sight, but on how we function with our vision. That’s where functional vision comes in.

🌍 What Is Functional Vision?

Functional vision is how a person uses their eyes to take in, process, and respond to their environment — and how that vision integrates with movement, learning, and development.

πŸ”Ž Environmental Complexity: Why Glasses Aren’t the Whole Story

If I place a simple pair of glasses against a complex background, you might struggle to see them. Now imagine what that’s like for a child with vision challenges.

It’s not about bad eyesight. It’s about how the brain processes the visual environment:

   •   Can the child handle indoor light but struggles outside?

   •   Do they freeze in busy rooms or open spaces?

   •   Are they OK at home but overwhelmed at school?

This is the start of orientation and mobility concerns, not simply poor eyesight.

🧠 Vision Is Neurological — Not Just Optical

Here’s what most people miss: vision is processed in the brain, not the eyes.

You can have a clean eye exam and still struggle with:

   •   Facial recognition

   •   Visual sequencing

   •   Peripheral awareness

   •   Convergence (close-up focus)

   •   Directionality (knowing where movement is happening)

I tell parents this all the time: You’re smart. You have a degree. But could you drive a car or work on a computer without your glasses? No? That’s not a sign of low intelligence. It’s just that your function is impaired.

Now imagine your child going through life like that — but without the vocabulary or context to explain it.

πŸƒ Movement Follows Vision

In Movement Lesson™, we teach that all milestones follow visual gains.

If your child can’t stabilize their visual field, they won’t roll, crawl, sit, or walk with ease. This has nothing to do with “low tone” or “behavior” — and everything to do with stabilization through vision.

Even something like a wide nasal septum or flat head shape (plagiocephaly) can throw off vision. Try lightly pressing on the back of your head — your eyes will lose focus. That’s how subtle changes affect functional vision.

πŸ‘οΈ My Personal Journey

My son was born legally blind. He began at the Foundation for the Blind. Through Movement Lesson™ and years of applied strategies, he now has a CVI (Cortical Visual Impairment) score of 10 — up from 2.3. But he still struggles with facial recognition and environmental complexities. It’s not “fixed” — it’s managed through function.

πŸŽ“ That’s Why I Teach This

Watch my 3-day Functional Vision Intensive to help parents and professionals:

   •   Decode vision reports

   •   Understand CVI classifications

   •   Assess cognitive vision through movement

   •   Learn strategies for developmental acceleration

We’ll look at real cases, AI-generated reports, and Zoom evaluations to show you how to support your child.

I’m not a VI-certified therapist — but I’m a movement and vision educator, and I’ve walked this path personally.
