Coming to Sitting
Stage 2
6 Months
This is the moment your baby begins organizing movement between positions, not just within them.
Coming to sitting is not a milestone.
It is the first true transitional pattern.
IF YOU'R SEEING THIS
If your baby:
- Is starting to roll into their side and push up
- Looks like they almost get to sitting but can't finish
- Gets "stuck" halfway between positions
- Falls into sitting instead of arriving with control
______________________________________
Or...
- Is not yet attempting to move into sitting
- Seems disconnected between upper and lower body
- Moves in pieces instead of as one system
You're in the right place!
WHAT THIS BUILDS
WHAT IS ACTUALLY HAPPENING
This is not a random movement.
Your baby is:
- Learning to rotate through the trunk
- Shifting weight intentionally to create lift
- Sequencing movement from floor to upright
- Organizing movement across planes (not just up/down)
- Beginning to control how they enter a position
This is the first true transitional system.
WHY THIS MATTERS
If this stage is clear:
- Sitting becomes natural
- Transitions become smooth
- Crawling develops with coordination
- Movement becomes fluid and connected
______________________________________
If this stage is missed or unclear:
- Sitting is placed, not organized
- Movement becomes segmented
- Transitions break down
- Crawling lacks integration
Everything in Stage 4 depends on this.
COMMON MISUNDERSTANDINGS
- "They just need to get stronger."
- "They'll figure it out if we sit them up."
______________________________________
Understand that...
- This is not strength
- This is not a position
This is a transition.
Sitting must be arrived at - not placed
START HERE (PRACTICAL)
You support it. They build it.
1. Create the environment
Allow side-lying play. This is wehre rotation begins
2. Encourage Movement
Let movement unfold. Avoid placing into sitting.
3. Let them play with hands
Encourage reaching across the body. This drives rotational organization.
4. Allow safe challenges
Give time on the floor. The floor creates the transition.
Repetition builds control. Freedom builds skill.
