Tummy Time Exercises and the Coming to Sitting Baby Milestones

I have spent the last week or two doing Michelle's Tummy Time exercises from the Tummy Time course on my 18-month-old. In that time, I made it through 13 exercises, spending 15 to 20 minutes on each exercise. This last Thursday, my daughter suddenly Came to Sitting through her back, and that made me super excited. That is an optimal milestone, and it finally happened for my baby.

Coming to Sitting through the back was an optimal milestone that my baby didn't have at a performance level. I had done the Coming to Sitting Course, so I knew my daughter had the developmental movement experiences of the milestone, but I didn't see why the performance wasn't happening.  So, some time ago, I decided to take a break from that milestone and focus on something else: jumping.

My baby has had almost no jump for as long as I can remember. She tried, but she would drop to the floor instead of getting air. Because of Michelle Turner,  I know that that's a sign of non-optimal development in her body.

About two to three months ago, Michelle did a Facebook Live on the milestone process that creates jumping. That video gave me some insights into what milestones to focus on for my baby. I took the courses, but my baby still wasn't jumping well. I could feel her jumping optimizing, but I still had to engage too much muscle in myself to help her jumps be successful and fun.

Below is the video Michelle did on the Jumping milestone. She only briefly mentioned tummy, but I did everything else, and still, something was missing for my baby, so I decided to take a little more time with her on the tummy time course.

What's remarkable is that I achieved more optimal development by focusing on giving my baby a higher-quality experience with her Tummy Time milestone. Everything else I have done up to this point has helped, but whatever she was missing in Tummy Time suddenly clicked for her, and now two milestones could more easily manifest in the body.

In this particular case, I got two milestones, Coming to Sitting and Jumping, and it's so cool that the movement lesson has empowered me as a parent to do something to change the developmental future of all my children, not just this baby. This baby would have never qualified for therapy, but I still want optimal for her as much as I do for my special needs children. Again, Michelle has taught me how to do that, and you can learn it too for your baby!

I could be discouraged that at 18 months, I had to work on one of the first milestones to make these two milestones more optimal. Still, for me, it's not about the milestone I am working on; it's about the optimal movement foundations that the milestone offers, and that's what I want for my baby—the best movement foundations needed for her optimal development. By doing that, I know all future milestone developments are possibilities for her.

It's Not About Going Backwards in Development; It's About Giving Your Child the Movement Foundations Needed for Optimal Development

When getting feedback from Michelle on what your child needs to optimize their development, it can be discouraging to hear her mention earlier milestones.

It's natural for you to think, "I don't like what this lady is saying; she is telling me to work backward." The reality is she is telling you how to move forward with your baby's present and future development by giving your child the movements of past optimal milestones. For Alice, the baby you saw in the video, working on her Tummy Time foundations ultimately allowed her Coming to Sitting Milestone to manifest.

I have another baby, and her Coming to Sitting Milestone manifested when I worked on her Grabbing the Feet milestone, so it's hard to say what exact combination of courses will get the milestone performances to manifest in your child's body.

That being said, for you to get the optimal milestones in your baby, you just have to work methodically and consistently through the courses, one by one, believing that no matter what, you are putting optimal movements and development in the system and the movements that manifest are your child's best capabilities. If you do that, your baby will have milestone optimization, and that's what's needed for any milestone to have the potential for a performance in your child's body.

Below is my schedule for the upcoming week of doing movement lessons and optimizing my children's development.

If the schedule above is confusing to you, below is a picture showing the times I am working on my children. If your email browser blocks pictures, be sure to approve the content in this email so you can see the image below. Remember that the time zone is MDT.

Some things to remember:

  • The time zone is MDT (Mountain Daylight Time)(Colorado time zone).
  • You can attend any Zoom, but if you have an active or less active child, typical to severe special needs, I tried to specify on the calendar when you can catch a session that might be more fitting for your particular home situation.
  • You can hop on, be on mute, and turn your video off if you would like. You are not required to talk during this time, but you are more than welcome to observe a home session if you want to do that.
  • You are not required to do the same thing I am doing. I will be doing my home ML session, and you can be doing yours.

If you still have questions, please email Erin at [email protected] and let me know.

If you have specific lessons you would like to see me do with my kids, please reply to this email and let me know.

Parents and professionals have loved this unique insight into my home movement lessons; I hope to see you there, too!

My goal is to encourage you to make your own ML schedule with your kids and then organize your lives to stay true to that schedule. It's okay if my times do not work for you. Make a schedule that does, and then start consistently doing your movement lessons.

Remember to define the exceptions to your schedule so that you don't beat yourself up for not sticking to it, and then stick to your schedule otherwise. (Like when I go out of town, and I am not with my kids, I am not going to beat myself up for not being able to work on them) Sticking to a schedule is critical to seeing change and feeling like you are genuinely making a difference in optimizing your child's development as you give them optimal movement experiences.
