Baby Milestone
Sleeping and Lying Down
When Your Baby Can't Sleep, Do You Say Things Like:
-
-"Is something wrong?"
-
-"Why won't my baby settle? What am I doing wrong?"
-
-"Is this normal? Will my baby ever sleep through the night?"
-
-"I can hear my baby over the white noise/fan/shower!"
-
-"I'm afraid to move/breathe/put my baby down!"
-
-"I hope this isn't going to affect my baby's development."
Parents are advised to speak to a professional if:
-
-The baby's sleep issues are accompanied by other symptoms (e.g., poor feeding, excessive fussiness, signs of reflux or illness).
-
-The parent's anxiety is overwhelming and interfering with their ability to function, which could be a sign of postpartum anxiety or depression.
What If All Your Worry Is Just Wanting What's Best for Your Child
In the first four weeks of life, your baby is learning to sleep. By four weeks old you should be able to easily transition your baby from your arms to the crib without waking them. And your movements should be normal and natural. You shouldn't have to move sooooo sllooowly; be careful yes, but not unnaturally quiet and soft.
In this stage of development your child should be establishing what we call their "absolute horizion" or their orientation in space. Their body is learning top from bottom, front from back and right from left. When that orientation gets mixed up your child startles awake, can't stay asleep without stimuli, or requires stimuli other than rocking in your arms to go to sleep.
We call this non-optimal development. When your baby can't figure out sleeping. Non-optimal is not bad development, it just means that your baby isn't figuring out their space and where they are within it. Once you help your child do this, sleep will come more easily and naturally.
Not getting this foundational movement figured out, sets your child up for non-optimal movements in their future milestones. Can they still turn out OKAY? YES, but their best future is not available to them and thats what we are here to help you offer your child, their best future by teaching you how to give the gift of movement.
