Tummy Time
When Your Baby Can't Do Tummy Time, Do You Say Things Like:
look at:
- Refulx
-
"Is something wrong?"
-
"He/She cries immediately! Am I making it worse?"
-
"She gets so red-faced and looks miserable."
-
"I feel like a bad parent for making them do this."
-
"He can't even lift his head for one second!"
-
"Is it okay if I let her cry for a minute? Or does that mean I should pick her up right away?"
-
"I'm worried I didn't do enough earlier and now it's too hard."
Parents are advised to speak to a professional if:
-
Persistent Aversion: If extreme fussiness or crying continues after 6 to 8 weeks of trying different modifications and positions.
-
Physical Asymmetry: If the baby consistently favors turning their head to only one side, seems extremely stiff, or conversely, feels excessively "floppy."
-
Regression: If they lose a skill they previously had.
What If All Your Worry Is Just Wanting What's Best for Your Child
From 5 to 8 weeks, your baby is learning tummy time. By 8 weeks old, your child should be comfortable with tummy time and good at it, not needing alternative positioning or propping to accomplish the movement.
While you are told that every baby develops at their own pace, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, your child is expected to be on track by kindergarten. Many are okay with this "wait and see" period to see if a child "figured out" development. At Movement Lesson we are not, and we take a more proactive approach to your child's development now and what you can do to optimize it, so you can be sure your child is ready for kindergarten, or if not, you can do something about it now instead of being surprised at 6 years old your child is now officially behind.
The quality of your child's tummy time matters now. Optimal Development is tummy time is mastered by 8 weeks old. Anything past that is non-optimal development. Does this mean you have special needs, no. It means that your child's can't have their best future in movement without your help.
If your baby still can't or is hating tummy time bast 8 weeks old the big question is WHY. Here are some things to look at:
- Reflux or Digesitve Discomfort
- Low Muscle Tone
- Lack of Neck and Core Strength (At Movement Lesson we call this a heavy head)
- Torticollis
- Prematurity
- Birth Trauma or Injury
- Underlying Physical Disabilities
We want to teach you how to give the gift of tummy time movements despite the difficulties your child may be experiencing and this helps them have optimal developmental experiences and as a result can have a unique progression instead of falling into cookie cutter personalities.
