Stage 1 - Horizontal

0-3 Months

BUILDING THE FOUNDATION FOR DEVELOPMENT

The first stage of development begins on the floor. Before sitting, crawling, or walking, the body must learn how to organize against gravity.

Movement Lesson focuses on the foundational relationships that allow all future development to emerge.

WHY HORIZONTAL MATTERS

The horizontal stage is where development begins. In these first months of life, babies learn how to:

  • Organize movement against gravity
  • Develop visual attention
  • Establish midline
  • Build rotation
  • Create the foundation for future transitions

Many developmental challenges can be traced back to missing or incomplete organization during this stage.

Movement Lesson focuses on strengthening the foundation before compensations develop

WHAT IS HAPPENING

From Organization to Integration

During this stage, the baby is not learning isolated skills. They are learning how the body works as a system. Vision, movement, balance, touch, and gravity are organized together. The quality of these early relationships influences every stage that follows

SIGNS THE SYSTEM MAY NEED SUPPORT

  • Difficulty tolerating tummy time
  • Persistent head turning preference
  • Limited visual engagement
  • Stiffness or asymmetry
  • Difficulty rolling

These observations do not define a diagnosis. They may indicate areas where development can benefit from additional support.

WHY THIS STAGE MATTERS

Movement Lesson is not focused on milestones alone.

A child can achieve a milestone through compensation

We focus on how the movement is organized.

When the foundation is strong, future development becomes easier, more efficient, and more adaptable.
